The old-time butchers are gone, but Butchertown remains. Once - back about 1840 – Butchertown was young and growing, a suburban expansion of Louisville.
Time is bringing renewal, a new vitality that is beginning to flow through the old streets, showing itself in new neighborhood concern, houses lovingly restored, shops and boutiques moving in. A new generation is discovering that 19th Century design can be a made to order setting for a 20th Century lifestyle; that neglected neighborhoods, like tarnished silver, reveal unexpected beauty with a little polishing.
Numerous shops and boutiques dot the neighborhood and each year in May, Butchertown, Inc., sponsors a Spring Festival, with art displayed on Washington Street and many of the restored homes are open to the public.
