Louisville, KY the city that registered the largest population gain of any city in the U.S. in 2003, vaulting from the 67th-largest city in the U.S. to 16th-largest. And it all happened in a single day!

January 6, 2003, the date when the city of Louisville officially merged with Jefferson County to form a new city that is officially named "Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government," but will continue to be known to the rest of the world as just plain old Louisville. The difference is that Louisville now claims 693,000 residents rather than its former count of about 250,000.

Each year on the first Saturday in May millions of people around the world watch the Kentucky Derby on television. Here in Derby City more than 140,000 racing fans pack the boxes, grandstands and infield at Churchill Downs to watch the top three-year-old Thoroughbreds in America compete in the "Run for the Roses."

Louisville has much more than just the Kentucky Derby however. The downtown Louiville area waterfront has undergone major development in recent years offering a superb venue for concerts and outdoor festivals. The waterfront now serves as host to new restaurants, playgrounds, amphitheatre, boat docks, water fountains and much more.
