Neighborhood of the Week - Seneca Gardens

The City of Seneca Gardens is a historic area in the City of Louisville and while it wasn’t incorporated until 1922 there are several homes that were built in the 1800s. Some locals believe that these early homes were used a part of the Underground Railroad.

Light Up Louisville is Tonight!

Now that Thanksgiving is officially over, we can jump head first into Christmas! One of Louisville’s first official kick off celebrations is Light Up Louisville and it is TONIGHT!

For 38 years this event has become a popular holiday tradition for many Louisvillians. Festivities begin at 4:00 pm and include; family activities, vendors, live entertainment, train rides, parade, and photos with Santa. New this year is the laser dome at the Big Four Bridge. The dome will feature a light show set to music. The laser dome and several other features  will continue through the holiday season.

Santa will join Mayor Fischer in the lighting of the tree at 8:00 pm. While the tree stands in Jefferson Square Park, the shows main stage is in front of Metro Hall. Make sure to get there early to get a good seat on the lawn. A firework show concludes the evening.

Lights Under Louisville at the Mega Caverns

While Thanksgiving is still a week away, one of Louisville’s most popular holiday experiences begins tomorrow, November 16 and runs through December 31. Lights Under Louisville at the Mega Caverns is the world’s only fully underground drive through Christmas light show.

There are over 3 million lights and 850 characters displayed to the tunes of your favorite Christmas carols. The young (and young at heart) will truly enjoy the sights and sounds.

New this year is the Christmas Express. These are daytime trips, and instead of driving yourself through, you are able to enjoy the show from an open top trailer. The rides last about 30 minutes and after it is through, children can enjoy milk and cookies!

With only 40 days until Christmas, you might want to start planning your trip now. To avoid long lines and wait times, try to avoid weekends, as these days seem to be the most crowded.

Festival of Trees and Lights

As the holidays quickly begin to approach, there are so many fun events to help get you in the spirit. One of my favorites is the Festival of Trees and Lights at Louisville Slugger Field. The festival begins Friday at 10:00 am and runs through the weekend.

Guests are able to browse the beautiful display of decor, trees and wreaths with sales proceeds helping to raise funds for Norton Children’s Hospital. Many of the activities including; crafts, cookie decorating, dreidel game and temporary tattoos are free with admission while some do require an additional fee.

On Friday night guests are treated to a firework show over Slugger Field along with complimentary hot chocolate and cider.

Neighborhood of the Week - Audubon Park

Just miles from downtown Louisville and nestled in a tight net community with convenient access to schools, hospitals and many local park areas, Audubon Park is an ideal place for a family.

The city has a long rich history dating back to the 1800s. One of the more unique things about the City of Audubon Park is its street names. The city was named after John James Audubon who was a bird artist and therefore the reason all but two of the city’s streets are named after birds; Cardinal, Dove, Robin, Wren, Linnet, Thrush, Oriole, Chickadee, Crossbill, Falcon, Curlew, Teal, Widgeon, Meadowlark, Sora and Eagle Pass. The two exceptions are Audubon Parkway and Valley Drive  In 1978 the city was designated as a Bird Sanctuary with support from the Audubon Park Garden Club and City of Audubon Park.

Each home in this area has great charm and character with an emphasis on nature and green space.   One of the more popular community events is the annual "Festival of the Dogwood". The festival highlights the natural beauty from the gorgeous tree lined streets when they bloom every April.

Pumpkin Smash at the Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo has wrapped up “The World’s Largest Halloween Party!” presented by Meijer, leaving behind hundreds of decorated pumpkins. So they have decided to put them to good use! This Sunday, November 4th from 10:30am-3:00pm, you and your family can watch as the animals in the zoo get to enjoy the pumpkins! This kind of animal enrichment improves the health and happiness of the animal residents at the zoo. Watch as they explore, play with, and eat the pumpkins, bringing a satisfying end to the Halloween holiday!
