Germantown is located between Barrett Ave and Eastern Parkway, with Goss Ave and Oak St as the main streets in the neighborhood. Near the Highlands, German immigrants settled in the area operating small farms and butcher shops in the late 1800s. In the 1890s development really started with the building of a largest collection of shotgun homes in Louisville. Shotgun houses typically feature a deep lot construction style where rooms open into other rooms instead of accessing from a common hallway. Today many of the shotgun houses have been renovated offering modern living.
While honoring its culture and history, Germantown offers a various restaurants, shops and entertainment for its community. Some popular stops in Germantown include Checks Café, The Post, Nord’s Bakery and Monnik Beer Co. While the residents tend to be younger, Germantown is a great place to call home for anyone!
