Shively, a western Jefferson county town and suburb of Louisville, was settled about 1780. Among the early settlers was Christian Shively who operated a mill and tavern. The town became identified with St. Helen Catholic Church, established in 1897, but the name Shively was adopted for the post office, which opened in 1920 and has since closed, because the name St. Helen was already in use. Shively was incorporated in 1938. The population is approximately 16,000.
The Shively area is developed and houses many conveniences such as groceries, cinemas and shopping. There is also an array of various home styles to choose from in this area. Shively is situated in the area where Dixie Highway and the Watterson Expressway intersect and therefor offers easy commutes to many Louisville area business centers and attractions.
